Cyber Workforce Series

July - John "Mace" Moesner - Cyber Warfare Executive & Retired U.S. Air Force Colonel

Think cybersecurity is just “hackers and hoodies”? Think again.

The cyber industry spans analysts, AI architects, policy advisors, red team operators, cloud defenders, digital forensics experts, cyber diplomats — and that’s just the beginning.

The Cyber Workforce Series by Tortora Brayda Institute for Partnerships in AI & Cybersecurity and AUSCF pulls back the curtain on what these roles actually look like.

Every month, a new cyber professional joins us to answer:

  • What do you really do?
  • How did you get here?
  • What skills actually matter?
  • What advice would you give someone starting today?

If you’re curious about cyber, considering a pivot, or helping students navigate career options - this series is for you.

Join us this month as we visit with Mace Moesner, Technical Executive Director for the Cyber Line of Business at CACI International.

John "Mace" Moesner is a distinguished cyber warfare executive and retired U.S. Air Force Colonel with over 30 years of elite experience spanning offensive cyber, defensive cyber, and cyber intelligence disciplines. He currently serves as the Technical Executive Director for the Cyber Line of Business at CACI International, a $7+ billion national security powerhouse that delivers cutting-edge expertise and distinctive technology to defense, intelligence, and civilian government clients. In this role, Mace serves as the senior technical advisor shaping CACI's cyber strategy, driving innovation in advanced research, and translating complex technical capabilities into mission-critical solutions.

Prior to joining CACI, Mace co-founded and managed SYNgularity Cyber, LLC, providing high-level cyberspace operations and information warfare consulting to national security clients. His deep expertise in the corporate sector builds upon a highly decorated 29-year active-duty military career.

Mace held multiple high-impact leadership positions at the vanguard of military cyber operations. At the Pentagon, he served as the Director of the Cyber Effects Division at HQ U.S. Air Force, where he integrated USAF cyberspace programs with multi-domain capabilities. He also served at Air Forces Cyber (AFCYBER) within the 624th Operations Center as the Planning Division Chief and Chief of the Integrated Remote Operations Center (IROC, now known as the CTOC). In these roles, he successfully coordinated over 2,800 missions across 14 units and directed the defense of the $14.2 billion Air Force Network. Additionally, Mace commanded the Air Force ISR Agency’s largest unit, the 7th Intelligence Squadron, leading them to multiple "Info Dominance Unit of the Year" honors.

A rare blend of strategic leader and deep technical operator, Mace is a graduate of the NSA’s prestigious Computer Network Operations Development Program (CNODP) and Remote Interactive Operator Training (RIOT). He is also a recognized thought leader and published researcher with the RAND Corporation, where he authored influential policy recommendations on cyber workforce design, information warfare, and global competition strategies.

Mace holds a B.S. in Computer Science and Mathematics from McKendree College, an M.S. in Computer Science from the Air Force Institute of Technology (AFIT), and a Post-Graduate Diploma in Strategic Intelligence from the National Intelligence University. He maintains an active Top Secret SCI clearance and holds the CISSP and CEH certifications.
